The Nagging Coach
The Apple Watch actively monitors your heart rate and accelerometer data in the background. If you start walking briskly to the train station or doing heavy lifting in the garage, the watch frequently assumes you are intentionally exercising. It will violently tap your wrist and throw a massive notification on the screen asking, “It looks like you are working out. Record an Outdoor Walk?” If you ignore it, the watch will ask you again a few minutes later if you want to stop the workout you never actually started. If you only want to log workouts when you explicitly open the Fitness app, you must disable these automated reminders.
How to Turn Off Workout Reminders
You can completely disable the predictive fitness prompts via the Workout settings.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main list and tap on Workout.
- Scroll down to the “Reminders” section.
- You will see two specific toggle switches: Start Workout Reminder and End Workout Reminder.
- Toggle both of these switches to the Off position (the green backgrounds will disappear).
Manual Logging Only
The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely stop analyzing your casual movements for workout signatures. You can sprint to catch a bus or carry heavy groceries up three flights of stairs, and the watch will remain perfectly silent. To log exercise data, you must manually launch the Workout app and explicitly tap “Start.”
