How to Disable “Hey Siri” on Apple Watch

The Accidental Assistant

The Apple Watch features an always-listening microphone designed to detect the wake phrase, “Hey Siri.” When it hears this phrase, the watch instantly wakes up, pauses whatever you are doing, and begins recording your voice to process a command. While convenient for setting quick timers, it is highly prone to false positives. If you are having a conversation and say something that sounds vaguely similar, or if a character on television says the trigger phrase, your watch will frequently light up and interrupt your conversation. To prevent these random activations, you must disable the vocal trigger.

How to Turn Off “Hey Siri”

You can revoke the microphone’s permission to listen for the wake phrase via the Siri settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on Siri.
  3. Look at the very top of the screen in the “Ask Siri” section.
  4. Look for the master toggle switch labeled Listen for “Hey Siri”.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Intentional Activation Only

The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will immediately shut down the always-listening background process. You can now confidently say the trigger phrase out loud, and the watch will completely ignore you. To use the digital assistant moving forward, you must explicitly press and hold the physical Digital Crown on the side of the watch, ensuring Siri only activates when you intentionally summon it.
