The Hover Description Annoyance
Windows 10 includes a built-in accessibility feature where resting your mouse cursor over any icon on the taskbar will spawn a small, yellow-tinted tooltip box. This box contains a text description of the application or the specific window title (e.g., hovering over the Chrome icon might spawn a box reading “Google Chrome” or the name of your active tab).
While this is helpful for beginners who don’t yet recognize application icons, it becomes incredibly annoying for power users. If you are reading an article and accidentally leave your mouse cursor resting at the bottom of the screen, a tooltip will suddenly pop up and obscure part of your taskbar or the bottom of your web page. If you know all your icons by heart and want a completely silent taskbar that doesn’t react when you rest your mouse on it, you can disable these tooltips via the Registry.
How to Disable Taskbar Hover Tooltips
You can turn off these popups by modifying the Windows Registry.
Warning: Always be careful when editing the registry. Follow the steps exactly.
- Click the Start button, type
regedit, and press Enter to open the Registry Editor. - Navigate to the following path by pasting it into the top address bar:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced- With the Advanced folder selected in the left pane, right-click on an empty space in the right pane.
- Select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.
- Name the newly created value exactly EnableBalloonTips. (If it already exists, skip to the next step).
- Double-click on
EnableBalloonTips. - Ensure the “Value data” is set to 0.
- Click OK and close the Registry Editor.
- Restart your computer (or restart the Windows Explorer process via Task Manager) for the change to take effect.
Once restarted, resting your mouse on taskbar icons will no longer spawn text descriptions, resulting in a cleaner, less distracted desktop experience.
