How to Disable “Offload Unused Apps” on iPhone

The Missing Software

You pull your iPhone out of your pocket to check into a flight or pay for parking using a specific app you haven’t opened in a few months, only to discover a tiny cloud icon next to the app’s name. When you tap it, nothing happens—because the phone silently uninstalled the app while you were sleeping. This is a feature called “Offload Unused Apps.” To save storage space, iOS automatically monitors your usage and deletes the core application files of software you rarely use, keeping only your personal data intact. While this saves gigabytes of space, it is incredibly frustrating if you urgently need the app and have no cellular service to redownload it. You must disable this automated deletion.

How to Turn Off Automated Offloading

You can revoke the operating system’s permission to manage your storage via the App Store settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down the main list (past General and Privacy) until you find the section for Apple’s built-in apps.
  3. Tap on App Store.
  4. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page.
  5. Look for the toggle switch labeled Offload Unused Apps.
  6. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Total Control

The change is absolute. From this moment forward, if you download a massive 2-gigabyte game and never play it, it will sit on your hard drive forever. Your iPhone will no longer quietly uninstall software behind your back. If you ever run out of storage space in the future, you will have to open your settings and explicitly choose which applications to delete manually.
