How to Disable the Windows 10 ‘Transparency Effects’ (Fluent Design)

The Cost of Eye Candy

Windows 10 introduced the “Fluent Design” system, which brought modern aesthetics to the operating system. One of the most noticeable features of Fluent Design is “Transparency Effects.” This adds a frosted glass, semi-transparent blur effect to the Start menu, the taskbar, the Action Center, and the sidebars of many built-in Windows applications (like Settings and Calculator).

While these acrylic blur effects look sleek, they require additional graphics processing power to render constantly. On older laptops, low-end PCs, or virtual machines without hardware acceleration, these transparency effects can cause UI lag, sluggish animations, and decreased battery life. If you prefer a highly responsive, solid-color interface (or simply want to maximize your system’s performance), you can disable these effects completely.

How to Disable Transparency Effects

You can turn off the frosted glass blur in the Windows Personalization settings.

  1. Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + I).
  2. In the Settings window, click on Personalization.
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Colors.
  4. Scroll down the right-hand pane until you find the toggle switch labelled Transparency effects.
  5. Click the toggle switch to turn it Off.

The change is instantaneous. Your Start menu, taskbar, and application sidebars will immediately switch to solid, opaque colors, slightly improving UI responsiveness and removing the background blur.
