How to Disable Spell Check in Google Chrome

The Red Underline Problem

Google Chrome features a built-in spell checker that actively monitors every single word you type into any text box on the internet. If you misspell a word, Chrome instantly places a jagged red line underneath it. While this is helpful for writing casual emails, it is incredibly frustrating for professionals. If you are a web developer writing code snippets into a forum, or an IT administrator typing complex, non-standard server commands into a web-based terminal, Chrome will aggressively flag almost every single technical term you type as a “spelling error,” turning your screen into a sea of red lines. To stop this visual distraction, you must disable the browser’s spell check engine entirely.

How to Turn Off Chrome Spell Check

You can completely disable the dictionary monitoring via the language settings.

  1. Open the Google Chrome desktop browser.
  2. Click the three vertical dots (⋮) in the top right corner and select Settings.
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Languages.
  4. Look for the section labeled Spell check.
  5. Locate the master toggle switch labeled “Check for spelling errors when you type text on web pages.”
  6. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the switch will turn grey).

The Clean Text Box

The change takes effect immediately without requiring a browser restart. The jagged red lines will instantly vanish from any text boxes you currently have open. You can now freely type code, internal company acronyms, or non-standard technical terminology into web forms without the browser constantly attempting to correct your grammar.
