The Intrusive Import
Windows 11 includes an AutoPlay feature designed to make connecting external devices idiot-proof. When you plug in a digital camera, an SD card, or even your smartphone, Windows detects the presence of image files. By default, AutoPlay will often intercept the connection and automatically launch the native Windows Photos app, presenting you with an “Import” dialogue box. While helpful for a novice user trying to dump vacation photos, it is incredibly annoying if you are a professional photographer trying to open those RAW files in Lightroom, or if you simply plugged your phone into your PC to charge the battery, not to transfer files.
Configuring AutoPlay Defaults
To retain control over your workflow and stop Windows 11 from automatically opening the Photos app every time you connect a camera or memory card, you must adjust the global AutoPlay settings.
Press the Windows key + I to open the main Settings application. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Bluetooth & devices. In the main panel, scroll down and click on AutoPlay. You will see a master toggle at the top (“Use AutoPlay for all media and devices”), which you can turn off to disable the feature entirely. However, if you still want a USB drive to prompt you, look at the dropdown menus below. Find the dropdown specifically labelled Memory card or the specific name of your connected device (e.g., “Apple iPhone”). Click the dropdown menu and change it from “Import photos and videos (Photos)” to Take no action or Ask me every time. Windows will now silently mount your device without launching unwanted software.
