The Constant Chime
Windows 11 is built with a comprehensive audio feedback system. Whether you unplug a USB flash drive, encounter a minor application error, click outside of a dialogue box, or receive a background notification, the operating system plays a specific chime or beep. While these audio cues are designed to keep you informed about system status, they can be incredibly disruptive. If you are recording a podcast, working in a quiet office environment, or simply prefer a completely silent computing experience where your speakers only play the media you explicitly choose, these constant system alerts are a major annoyance.
Silencing the Operating System
To eliminate all unexpected chimes and beeps and disable system sounds completely in Windows 11, you must change the global sound scheme rather than muting individual applications.
Press the Windows Key, type Change system sounds, and hit Enter. This specific command bypasses the modern Settings app and directly opens the classic “Sound” Control Panel window, specifically on the Sounds tab. Look at the section labelled “Sound Scheme.” By default, this dropdown menu is set to “Windows Default.” Click the dropdown menu and select No Sounds. You will notice that almost all the speaker icons next to the events in the list below disappear. To ensure absolute silence, look just beneath that list for a checkbox labelled Play Windows Startup sound. Ensure this box is unchecked. Finally, click Apply, and then OK. Your computer will now operate in total silence, regardless of errors or notifications.
