Windows 11 has a built-in system for delivering “tips and suggestions” to users via toast notifications, the Settings app, the Start Menu’s Recommended section, and even the Lock Screen. These suggestions range from mildly helpful (“Did you know you can use Snap Layouts?”) to outright promotional (“Try Microsoft Edge for a faster browsing experience” or “Complete your Microsoft 365 setup”). For experienced users who already know how to use their operating system, these pop-ups are intrusive and patronising. On freshly installed systems, the frequency of these suggestions can feel relentless, interrupting your workflow multiple times per hour during the first few days of use.
Disabling Tips, Suggestions, and Promotional Notifications
To stop Windows 11 from automatically showing tips, suggestions, and promotional notifications, you must disable several related settings scattered across the Settings app.
Open Settings (Win + I). Navigate to System > Notifications. Scroll down to the bottom of the Notifications page. Uncheck the following options: Offer suggestions on how I can set up my device, Get tips and suggestions when I use Windows, and Show me the Windows welcome experience after updates and occasionally when I sign in. Next, navigate to Personalisation > Start. Turn off Show recommendations for tips, shortcuts, new apps, and more. This clears the promotional content from the Start Menu’s Recommended section. Finally, go to Privacy & security > General. Turn off Show me suggested content in the Settings app and Let apps show me personalised ads by using my advertising ID. With all of these toggles disabled, Windows 11 will stop delivering unsolicited tips, promotional banners, and setup suggestions entirely.
