The Omnibox Clutter
Google Chrome’s address bar (the Omnibox) is designed to be the single entry point for all your web interactions. Recently, Google has been aggressively integrating Google Lens—their image recognition AI—directly into the browser. One of these integrations places a small, colorful Google Lens camera icon directly inside the Omnibox. Clicking it allows you to upload an image or capture a screenshot to search the web visually.
While visual search is a powerful tool on a smartphone, many desktop users find the Lens icon in the address bar completely unnecessary and visually distracting. If you exclusively use the address bar for typing URLs and standard text-based Google searches, the Lens icon simply takes up space. If you want a cleaner, more traditional address bar, you can disable the Lens integration via Chrome Flags.
How to Remove the Lens Icon from the Address Bar
You must access Chrome’s experimental settings to disable this specific UI element.
- Open Google Chrome.
- Click inside the main address bar at the top of the browser.
- Type
chrome://flagsand press Enter. - A page titled “Experiments” will load.
- In the search bar at the top of the page, type Enable Lens features in Omnibox.
- The specific flag will appear highlighted in yellow. Next to it is a dropdown menu, likely set to “Default.”
- Click the dropdown menu and select Disabled.
- Chrome will prompt you to restart the browser for the change to take effect. Click the blue Relaunch button at the bottom of the screen.
When Chrome reopens, look at your address bar. The colorful Google Lens camera icon will be gone, returning the Omnibox to a clean, text-only state.
