The Intrusive Math Panel
Google Docs includes a built-in Equation editor that allows users to type complex mathematical formulas, fractions, and symbols. If you open a document that contains an equation, or if you click on an existing equation to edit it, Google Docs automatically drops down a secondary toolbar right below the main formatting bar. This is the Equation Toolbar, featuring Greek letters, math operators, and relations.
However, once you are finished editing the math and click away to continue typing regular text, the Equation Toolbar often stays persistently visible at the top of the screen. If you are not writing a math-heavy paper and only needed to insert a single formula, this extra toolbar needlessly eats up vertical screen space and clutters the interface. You can manually dismiss it so it stops showing.
How to Hide the Equation Toolbar
You can turn off the persistent Equation Toolbar from the View menu.
- Open your web browser and navigate to your document in Google Docs.
- Ensure you are not currently actively clicking inside a math equation block.
- At the very top of the screen, click on the View menu.
- Look down the dropdown list for the option labelled Show equation toolbar. It will likely have a checkmark next to it.
- Click on “Show equation toolbar” to uncheck it.
The secondary math toolbar will instantly slide away, restoring your clean workspace. If you ever need to insert a new equation in the future, you can simply go to Insert > Equation, and the toolbar will temporarily reappear while you work.
