Every network-connected device has a Media Access Control (MAC) address. This is a unique, 12-character alphanumeric identifier (like 00:1A:2B:3C:4D:5E) assigned to the physical network hardware inside your device. While an IP address can change depending on what network you connect to, the hardware MAC address is theoretically permanent. You may need to find your iPhone’s MAC address if your office, school, or university network uses “MAC filtering” to manually whitelist specific devices before granting them internet access.
How to Find Your Wi-Fi MAC Address
On an iPhone, Apple refers to the MAC address specifically as the “Wi-Fi Address.”
- Unlock your iPhone and open the Settings app.
- Tap on General.
- Tap on About at the very top of the list.
- Scroll down the page until you find the “Network” section.
- Look for the row labelled Wi-Fi Address.
- The 12-character alphanumeric string listed on the right side is your MAC address.
Understanding Private Wi-Fi Addresses
Finding the MAC address is only half the battle. To protect your privacy and prevent retail stores from tracking your physical movements by scanning for your MAC address, Apple introduced a feature called “Private Wi-Fi Address.” When this is enabled, your iPhone generates a fake, randomized MAC address specifically for that particular Wi-Fi network, masking your true hardware address.
If your IT administrator asks for your MAC address to whitelist your phone, you must give them the randomized address for that specific network, not your global hardware address. Alternatively, you must turn the Private Address feature off for that network.
How to Find the Network-Specific MAC Address
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap on Wi-Fi.
- Ensure you are connected to (or trying to connect to) the specific network you need to be whitelisted for.
- Tap the small blue “i” (Information) icon next to the network name.
- Scroll down and locate the Wi-Fi Address field. This string of characters is the exact MAC address your phone is currently broadcasting to this specific router.
How to Disable Private Addresses for a Specific Network
If your office network requires your true hardware address, you can disable the randomization feature on a per-network basis.
- In the same Wi-Fi network information menu (from step 4 above), locate the Private Wi-Fi Address toggle switch.
- Turn the toggle switch Off.
- A warning message will appear stating that turning off Private Address will temporarily disconnect you from the network. Tap Continue or Rejoin.
- Your iPhone will reconnect using its true, permanent hardware MAC address.
