Our smartphones are the digital diaries of our lives, containing everything from mundane grocery lists to highly personal photographs. There are countless situations where you might need to hand your unlocked iPhone to a friend, family member, or colleague—perhaps to show them a funny meme or a picture of your new pet. But doing so often comes with a wave of anxiety: what if they start swiping left or right and stumble upon a photo they were not meant to see?
To protect your privacy and eliminate this anxiety, you must learn how to hide photos on your iPhone. Apple provides a dedicated “Hidden” album feature built directly into the native Photos app, allowing you to secure sensitive images safely behind your biometric locks.
How to Move Photos to the Hidden Album
The process of hiding a photograph removes it completely from your main camera roll, your “Recent” album, and all of your automatically generated widgets and memories.
- Open the native Photos app on your iPhone.
- Locate the photo or video you wish to hide and tap on it so it takes up the full screen. (If you want to hide multiple photos at once, tap Select in the top right corner of the grid view and tap all the images you want to secure).
- Tap the three horizontal dots located in the top right corner of the screen.
- From the drop-down menu that appears, tap on Hide.
- A confirmation prompt will pop up at the bottom of the screen. Tap Hide Photo to confirm.
The image will instantly disappear from your main library.
How to Access Your Hidden Photos
Hiding a photo does not delete it. It merely moves it to a secure, segregated folder within the Photos app.
- Open the Photos app.
- Tap on the Albums tab at the bottom of the screen.
- Scroll all the way down to the very bottom, past your media types, until you find the section labelled Utilities.
- Tap on the album named Hidden.
- Your iPhone will prompt you to authenticate using Face ID (or Touch ID on older models). Once verified, the album will unlock, revealing all of your hidden media.
How to Make the Hidden Album Completely Invisible
While locking the folder behind Face ID is excellent security, the very existence of an album labelled “Hidden” in your Utilities menu might invite unwanted questions from a snooping partner or friend. For maximum privacy, you can tell iOS to remove the album from the menu entirely.
- Close the Photos app and open your iPhone’s main Settings app.
- Scroll down until you find the Photos settings pane and tap on it.
- Look for the toggle switch labelled Show Hidden Album.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the switch will turn grey).
Now, if someone navigates to the Utilities section in your Photos app, the Hidden album will not even be listed. When you want to view your hidden photos again, you simply return to the Settings app and toggle the switch back on.
How to Unhide a Photo
If you decide a photo no longer needs to be kept secret, restoring it to your main camera roll is incredibly simple.
- Navigate to your Hidden album and authenticate with Face ID.
- Tap on the photo you wish to unhide.
- Tap the three horizontal dots in the top right corner.
- Select Unhide from the menu.
The photo will instantly be removed from the Hidden album and placed back into its original chronological position within your main Photos library.
