Whether you are shopping for a new sofa, trying to hang a picture frame perfectly in the centre of a wall, or verifying the dimensions of a shipping box, not having a physical tape measure on hand is incredibly frustrating. However, if you own a modern iPhone, you already have a highly sophisticated measuring tool sitting in your pocket.
Apple includes a built-in Augmented Reality (AR) utility that utilises your device’s camera and internal gyroscopes to calculate distances in the real world. By learning how to use the iPhone Measure app to measure objects and rooms, you can quickly capture highly accurate dimensions without ever reaching for a toolbox.
Locating and Preparing the Measure App
The Measure app comes pre-installed on all modern iPhones running iOS 12 or later. It has a black icon featuring a yellow and white ruler.
- Unlock your iPhone and swipe down on the home screen to open the Search bar.
- Type Measure and tap the app icon to open it.
- When you first launch the app, you will likely see a prompt asking you to “Move your iPhone to start”.
- Point your camera at the area you want to measure and slowly pan the phone side to side. This allows the AR software to analyse the lighting, detect flat surfaces (like floors and tables), and establish a spatial baseline.
Taking a Basic Measurement
Once the app has calibrated the space, a white circle with a dot in the centre will appear on your screen. This is your crosshair.
- Move your phone until the white dot is positioned exactly over the starting point of your measurement (for example, the bottom corner of a cardboard box).
- Tap the large Plus (+) icon at the bottom of the screen. This drops a digital pin.
- Slowly pan your iPhone across the object until the white dot reaches the ending point. You will see a yellow line stretch out behind your crosshair, complete with a real-time distance calculation.
- When you reach the end point, tap the Plus (+) icon again to drop the second pin.
The measurement is now locked on your screen. You can tap the number floating above the yellow line to see the exact measurement in both imperial (inches/feet) and metric (centimetres/metres) units.
Automatically Measuring Rectangular Objects
The Measure app is incredibly intelligent. If you point your camera at a distinct rectangular object (such as a computer monitor, a picture frame, or a piece of paper lying on a desk), the app will often draw a yellow box around it automatically.
When this yellow box appears, simply tap the Plus (+) icon once. The app will instantly calculate the length and width of the object simultaneously, saving you the trouble of dropping individual corner pins.
Understanding LiDAR vs Standard Cameras
The accuracy of the Measure app depends heavily on exactly which model of iPhone you own.
- Standard iPhones (e.g., iPhone 13, 14, 15): These devices rely solely on the camera lens and AI algorithms to calculate distance. While they are usually accurate to within an inch, they can struggle in poor lighting, on highly reflective surfaces, or against plain white walls lacking texture.
- iPhone Pro Models (e.g., iPhone 13 Pro, 14 Pro, 15 Pro): Pro models are equipped with a dedicated LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) scanner on the back camera module. This sensor actively fires invisible lasers to measure depth perfectly. Measure app readings taken on a LiDAR-equipped iPhone are exceptionally accurate and can be trusted for precision DIY work.
