How to Hide the Bookmark Bar in Google Chrome

The Bookmarks Bar in Google Chrome is a highly convenient horizontal strip located just below the URL address bar, giving you one-click access to your favorite websites and folders. However, on smaller displays like 13-inch laptops, horizontal screen real estate is precious. Leaving the Bookmarks Bar permanently visible consumes a significant chunk of pixels that could otherwise be used to display more of the actual web page you are reading. If you prefer a minimalist interface and want to maximize your viewing area, you can easily hide the Bookmarks Bar.

How to Hide the Bookmarks Bar

You can toggle the visibility of the bar using a simple menu option or a quick keyboard shortcut.

Method 1: Using the Mouse

  1. Open the Google Chrome browser.
  2. Click the three vertical dots (the Chrome menu) in the top-right corner of the window.
  3. Hover your mouse down to Bookmarks and lists.
  4. In the fly-out menu, look for the option labelled Show bookmarks bar.
  5. If it has a checkmark next to it, click it once to uncheck it.

Method 2: Using a Keyboard Shortcut

For a much faster toggle, simply press Ctrl + Shift + B (on Windows) or Cmd + Shift + B (on Mac) on your keyboard. Pressing this combination will instantly hide the bar, and pressing it again will instantly bring it back.

Note: Even when the Bookmarks Bar is hidden from your main browsing view, Google Chrome will still automatically display it whenever you open a blank New Tab page.
