If you are conducting research, looking for uncensored news imagery, or searching for specific adult-oriented artistic content, Yandex’s default filtering will actively hide the most relevant results. To view an unrestricted web, you must manually adjust the filtering parameters.
Understanding Yandex’s Three Filtering Levels
Unlike some search engines that offer a simple “On/Off” toggle, Yandex provides three distinct tiers of content filtration:
- Family search: The strictest level. It aggressively blocks all explicit content, profanity, and potentially shocking imagery. It is designed for shared family computers.
- Moderate filter (Default): The standard setting. It will hide hardcore explicit content and shocking images unless your search query explicitly and specifically requests them.
- No filter: Completely unrestricted. Yandex will display all available indexed content, including mature and explicit material, regardless of the search query.
How to Turn Off SafeSearch (Desktop)
You can change these settings without needing to create a Yandex account, though your preferences will be stored in a local browser cookie. If you clear your cookies, the settings will revert to “Moderate.”
- Open your web browser and navigate to yandex.com (or yandex.ru).
- Perform a basic search for any random word (e.g., “cars”) to reach the main search results page.
- Look at the top right corner of the screen, near your profile icon or the login button. Click on the Settings icon (it looks like a small gear or sliders).
- A dropdown menu will appear. Click on Search settings (or sometimes labeled as “Other settings” depending on your region).
- Scroll down the page until you find the section titled Filter pages with adult content.
- Select the radio button next to No filter.
- Scroll to the very bottom of the page and click the yellow Save button.

How to Turn Off SafeSearch (Mobile Browser)
If you are using Safari on an iPhone or Chrome on an Android device to access Yandex, the process requires navigating a slightly more condensed menu.
- Navigate to yandex.com on your mobile browser and perform a search.
- Tap the three horizontal dots (or the gear icon) located in the upper right corner of the search bar area.
- Tap Settings from the menu that appears.
- Scroll down to the Search results section.
- Locate the Filter adult content options.
- Tap to select No filter.
- Ensure you tap Save at the bottom of the screen before exiting.
Troubleshooting: Why is the Setting Locked?
If you navigate to the Yandex settings page and find that the “No filter” option is greyed out, unclickable, or automatically reverts to “Family search,” your network is likely overriding your browser.
If you are using a computer at a public library, a corporate office, or a university, the IT administrators often enforce SafeSearch at the router or DNS level. Yandex detects this network-level command and physically prevents you from bypassing the filter in the browser. You cannot turn it off unless you disconnect from that Wi-Fi network and use a private cellular connection or a VPN.
