By default, Yahoo sets its SafeSearch to a “Strict” or “Moderate” level. If you are an adult conducting uncensored research or searching for specific mature content, this filter will actively block the most relevant results. You must manually disable it to view an unrestricted internet.
How to Turn Off SafeSearch (Desktop)
You can adjust the SafeSearch settings quickly directly from the Yahoo Search results page.
- Open your web browser and navigate to search.yahoo.com.
- Perform a basic search for any random word (e.g., “cars”) to reach the main search results page.
- Look at the top right corner of the screen, just above the first search result, and click on the Settings icon (it looks like a small gear).
- A dropdown menu will appear. Look for the SafeSearch section.
- You will see a dropdown box that is likely set to “Strict” or “Moderate.” Click the box.
- Select Off – do not filter results from the list.
The page will automatically refresh, and your future searches will yield completely unfiltered results.
How to Turn Off SafeSearch (Mobile Browser)
If you are using Yahoo Search on a smartphone browser (like Safari on iOS or Chrome on Android), the settings menu is slightly different.
- Navigate to search.yahoo.com on your mobile device and perform a search.
- Look at the top right corner of the screen and tap the Menu icon (the three horizontal lines).
- Scroll down to the bottom of the menu and tap Settings.
- Locate the SafeSearch preference in the list.
- Tap the dropdown menu and change the setting from Strict/Moderate to Off.
- Crucial Step: You must scroll down and tap the Save button. If you simply close the menu, the setting will not apply.
Why Does SafeSearch Keep Turning Back On?
The most common frustration with Yahoo SafeSearch is that you turn it off, but the next day it is mysteriously back on. This happens for one of two reasons:
- You Cleared Your Cookies: If you are not logged into a Yahoo account, Yahoo saves your SafeSearch preference using a browser cookie. If you use “Incognito Mode,” “Private Browsing,” or have your browser set to delete cookies when you close it, Yahoo instantly forgets your preference.
