How to Enable Dark Mode on WhatsApp Web

Saving Your Eyes During Long Chat Sessions

If you spend all day typing at a desk, using WhatsApp Web in your computer browser is infinitely faster and more convenient than constantly picking up your smartphone to reply to messages. However, staring at the bright, glaring white background of the default WhatsApp interface on a large desktop monitor can cause serious eye strain and fatigue after a few hours.

To solve this, WhatsApp includes a native “Dark Mode” setting for its web application. Dark Mode flips the colour scheme, turning the blinding white backgrounds into deep, soothing greys and blacks while keeping the text highly legible.

Enabling this feature takes only a few seconds, and it is a massive relief for your eyes, especially if you work in a dimly lit office or prefer to chat late at night.

Method 1: Manually Toggle Dark Mode in WhatsApp Web

The easiest way to change the appearance is to use WhatsApp’s internal settings menu. This method works perfectly regardless of whether you are using Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Safari, or Mozilla Firefox.

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to web.whatsapp.com. (Ensure you are already logged in by scanning the QR code with your phone).
  2. Look at the top left corner of the screen, just above your list of recent chats. You will see a three-dot menu icon (⋮). Click it.
  3. Select Settings from the dropdown list.
  4. In the Settings menu, click on Theme.
  5. A small pop-up box will appear in the centre of the screen with three options: Light, Dark, or System default.
  6. Select Dark.
  7. Click the OK button.

The entire WhatsApp Web interface will instantly shift to the dark colour palette. Your browser will remember this setting permanently, so it will remain dark every time you log back in until you manually change it back to Light mode.

Method 2: Sync WhatsApp with Your Computer’s System Settings

If you are someone who likes their computer to be bright during the day but dark at night, manually toggling the WhatsApp setting every single evening gets annoying very quickly.

Fortunately, modern operating systems like Windows 11 and macOS allow you to schedule Dark Mode to turn on automatically at sunset. You can tell WhatsApp Web to simply listen to your computer and change its colours automatically based on the time of day.

  1. Open WhatsApp Web and click the three-dot menu icon (⋮) above your chat list.
  2. Click on Settings, then click on Theme.
  3. In the pop-up box, select System default.
  4. Click OK.

Now, WhatsApp Web will automatically synchronise with your computer. If your Windows PC or Mac is currently set to Light mode, WhatsApp will be white. The moment your computer switches to its system-wide Dark Mode at night, WhatsApp Web will instantly turn dark to match it, requiring zero manual effort from you.

What About the WhatsApp Desktop App?

If you prefer to use the standalone WhatsApp Desktop application (downloaded from the Microsoft Store or Mac App Store) instead of the browser version, the process is virtually identical.

  1. Open the WhatsApp Desktop app.
  2. Click the Settings icon (the small gear) in the bottom left corner of the window.
  3. Click on Personalisation (or Appearance, depending on the app version).
  4. Under the Theme section, choose Dark or System default.

Your desktop app will instantly apply the darker, more comfortable colour scheme.
