The Problem with Traditional AirDrop
For years, Apple’s AirDrop has been the fastest and most reliable way to transfer photos, videos, and large files between Apple devices. However, it had one significant limitation: it required both users to remain in close physical proximity until the transfer was completely finished. If you were sending a massive 4K video file to a friend and one of you walked away, the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct connection would break, and the transfer would fail.
Starting with iOS 17, Apple introduced a solution: AirDrop over Cellular Data. This feature allows an AirDrop transfer to continue securely over the internet even if you step out of range.
Requirements for AirDrop Over Mobile Data
Before you can use this feature, ensure that both you and the recipient meet the following requirements:
- Both iPhones must be updated to iOS 17 or later.
- Both devices must be signed into iCloud.
- Both devices must have an active mobile data (cellular) connection.
How to Enable AirDrop Over Cellular Data
While the feature is incredibly useful, it is not always enabled by default depending on your network carrier settings. You must verify that your iPhone is allowed to use your mobile data plan for these transfers.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on General.
- Tap on AirDrop.
- Look for the section labeled Out of Range.
- Toggle the switch next to Use Cellular Data so that it is green (enabled).
Note: If you have a limited data plan, you may want to leave this feature disabled, as transferring large video files over cellular networks can quickly consume your monthly data allowance.
How the Process Works in Practice
Using AirDrop over cellular data does not change how you initiate the transfer. You still start the process exactly as you normally would.
- Select the photo, video, or file you want to share.
- Tap the Share button and select AirDrop.
- Bring your iPhone close to the recipient’s iPhone (using the NameDrop proximity feature) or tap their contact icon on your screen.
- The transfer will begin over the local Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connection.
Here is where the magic happens: If the recipient needs to leave immediately, they can walk away. Once the iPhones lose physical proximity, the local connection drops, but the transfer will seamlessly transition to iCloud over the cellular network. The recipient will receive a notification when the download finishes, no matter where they are.
Troubleshooting Transfer Failures
If your AirDrop transfer fails when walking away, check the following:
- Low Power Mode: If either phone is in Low Power Mode, background network activity (including cellular AirDrop) may be restricted to save battery.
- VPN Interference: Active VPN connections can sometimes disrupt the secure handoff between local Wi-Fi and the cellular network. Try disabling your VPN temporarily during the transfer.
- iCloud Storage: While the file does not permanently count against your iCloud storage, the system requires enough temporary iCloud space to facilitate the secure transfer between the two devices.
By enabling AirDrop over mobile data, you no longer have to awkwardly stand next to someone waiting for a progress bar to finish.
