How to Use the AutoFormat Feature to Instantly Create Fractions in Microsoft Word

Typing complex fractions in a Microsoft Word document can be visually frustrating. If you type “1/2”, Microsoft Word will automatically shrink the numbers and stack them beautifully into a tiny, professional fraction (½). However, if you type a more complex fraction like “5/16” or “3/32”, Word completely ignores it, leaving it as raw, ugly, full-sized text. This creates a highly unprofessional document where half of your fractions are formatted correctly and the other half are completely broken. Fortunately, you can fix this using a hidden AutoFormat trick.

Why Word Ignores Complex Fractions

Microsoft Word does not actually contain a dynamic fraction engine. The “1/2” formatting is a hard-coded illusion. The software simply looks for three specific strings of text (1/2, 1/4, and 3/4) and swaps them out for specialized Unicode symbols that are pre-drawn to look like fractions. Because there is no pre-drawn Unicode symbol for “5/16”, Word cannot format it.

How to Create Custom Stacked Fractions

To force Word to dynamically stack any combination of numbers, you must hijack the built-in Equation engine using a highly specific AutoFormat shortcut.

  1. Open your Microsoft Word document.
  2. Place your cursor where you want the complex fraction to appear.
  3. Press the keyboard shortcut Alt + = (Alt and the Equals key).

This shortcut will instantly spawn a small, shaded “Equation” box directly inside your sentence.

  1. Inside this box, type your raw fraction exactly as you normally would, using the standard forward slash (e.g., 5/16).
  2. Immediately press the Spacebar.

The exact moment you press the spacebar, the AutoFormat engine will instantly hijack the numbers, shrink them, and perfectly stack the “5” directly on top of the “16” with a horizontal line between them. You can then press the right arrow key on your keyboard to exit the Equation box and continue typing your sentence normally.
