When you insert a standard table into a Microsoft Word document, the software automatically enables a feature called “AutoFit to Contents.” As you begin typing a long sentence into one of the cells, Word will aggressively and dynamically widen that specific column to accommodate the text, simultaneously shrinking the neighboring columns to keep the table within the page margins.
This dynamic resizing behavior makes creating structured, professional-looking tables incredibly frustrating. If you are designing a form, an invoice, or a structured data grid, you want the columns to remain perfectly static at the specific widths you set them to, regardless of how much text is stuffed inside the cell.
You can configure your table to completely disable the AutoFit algorithm, forcing the column widths to remain rigidly locked in place.
How to Stop Word from Dynamically Resizing Table Columns
You must turn off the “Automatically resize to fit contents” setting within the Table Properties.
- Open your document in Microsoft Word.
- Click anywhere inside the table you want to lock. (A small square icon with a crosshair will appear at the top-left corner of the table).
- Right-click anywhere inside the table and select Table Properties… from the context menu.
- In the Table Properties dialog box, ensure you are on the Table tab.
- Click the Options… button at the bottom right.
- A new “Table Options” dialog box will appear. Look at the bottom for the checkbox labeled Automatically resize to fit contents.
- Uncheck this box.
- Click OK twice to close both windows and save your changes.
Your table’s column widths are now permanently locked. If you type a massive paragraph into a single cell, Word will no longer push the column wider. Instead, the text will simply wrap to the next line within the cell, pushing the row taller while maintaining the precise horizontal structure of your table.
