How to Stop Microsoft Word from Automatically Resizing Tables to Fit Text

When you insert a table into Microsoft Word, it typically spans from the left margin to the right margin with evenly distributed columns. However, by default, Word enables a feature called “Automatically resize to fit contents.” As you begin typing a very long sentence into one specific cell, Word will dynamically and aggressively stretch that column wider, simultaneously shrinking all the adjacent columns to make room.

While this intelligent resizing is meant to prevent text from wrapping awkwardly, it absolutely ruins the layout of carefully designed forms, invoices, or structural grids. If you spend ten minutes perfectly aligning three columns to be exactly two inches wide, you do not want Word to violently shift those boundaries the moment someone types their long last name into a data entry field.

You can dive into the Table Properties menu to explicitly disable this dynamic AutoFit behavior, forcing your column widths to remain locked exactly where you placed them, and forcing any long text to simply wrap to a second line.

How to Stop Word from Auto-Resizing Tables

You must disable the AutoFit option within the specific table’s Options menu.

1. Open your document in Microsoft Word.
2. Click anywhere inside the table you want to lock.
3. Look for the small crosshairs icon (a square with four arrows) that appears at the top-left corner of the table. Right-click this icon to select the entire table.
4. From the context menu that appears, select Table Properties….
5. In the new dialog box, ensure you are on the Table tab (the first tab).
6. At the bottom right of this tab, click the button labeled Options….
7. A smaller “Table Options” box will appear. Look at the bottom under the “Options” section.
8. Locate the checkbox labeled Automatically resize to fit contents.
9. Uncheck this box.
10. Click OK twice to close both windows and save the changes.

Your table is now structurally locked. No matter how much data you or your coworkers type into a specific cell, the column lines will not budge a single millimeter. The text will strictly obey your boundaries and wrap neatly to the next line within the cell, preserving your perfect document layout.
