How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Turning off the Screen

The Blank Screen Interruption

To conserve energy and extend battery life on laptops, Windows 11 is configured by default to automatically turn off the display after a few minutes of inactivity. While this is generally a good practice for power management, it can be highly disruptive depending on your workflow. If you are reading a long, dense PDF document without actively touching the mouse, presenting a slide deck to a room, or monitoring a dashboard of slow-moving analytics data, having the screen suddenly go black forces you to constantly wiggle the mouse to keep the system awake, breaking your concentration.

Managing Screen Timeout Settings

To ensure your display remains visible during passive tasks and stop Windows 11 from automatically turning off the screen, you must adjust the global power and battery settings.

Press the Windows key + I to open the Settings application. Ensure you are on the System tab in the left-hand navigation pane. In the main window, click on Power & battery (or just “Power” if you are on a desktop PC). Look for the section titled Screen and sleep and click it to expand the options. You will see dropdown menus for both battery power and when the device is plugged in. Locate the dropdown labeled On battery power, turn off my screen after and change the value to Never (or a much longer duration, like 2 hours). Do the same for the When plugged in, turn off my screen after dropdown. Note: It is highly recommended to also change the corresponding “Put my device to sleep after” settings to match, otherwise Windows might keep the screen on but still suspend the hard drive and background processes.
