The Sudden Blackout
To conserve energy and extend the lifespan of your monitor, Windows 11 is configured to automatically turn off your display after a set period of inactivity. If you haven’t moved the mouse or touched the keyboard in a while, the screen goes pitch black. While this is standard power-saving behavior, it can be incredibly disruptive if you are reading a long, static document, referencing a recipe in the kitchen, or monitoring a slow-moving progress bar from across the room. Having to constantly walk over and wiggle the mouse just to keep the screen alive is a major annoyance.
Keeping the Display Active
To ensure your monitor stays lit as long as you need it and stop Windows 11 from automatically turning off the screen, you must adjust the specific display timeout settings within the Power menu.
Press the Windows Key, type Settings, and press Enter to open the main configuration panel. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, ensure you are on the System tab. In the main right-hand panel, click on Power & battery (this might just be labelled “Power” on desktop PCs). Look for the section named Screen and sleep and click on it to expand the options. You will see a dropdown menu labelled When plugged in, turn off my screen after (laptop users will also see an “On battery power” option). Click the dropdown menu, scroll all the way to the bottom of the time increments, and select Never. Your screen will now remain on indefinitely until you manually press the physical power button on the monitor.
