How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Starting Skype

The Intrusive Login

Skype has been deeply integrated into the Windows ecosystem for years. On many Windows 11 installations, particularly those set up with a Microsoft Account, the Skype application is configured to launch automatically the moment you boot your PC and log in. It will often pop up a sign-in window or silently run in the background, consuming RAM and network resources. If you use Microsoft Teams, Zoom, or Discord as your primary communication tool and only keep Skype installed for the occasional international call to a relative, having it aggressively start every single day is completely unnecessary.

Revoking Startup Permissions

To speed up your boot time and stop Windows 11 from automatically starting Skype when you log in, you must disable its startup permission via the Task Manager.

Right-click the Start button on your taskbar and select Task Manager from the power user menu (or press Ctrl+Shift+Esc). In the Task Manager window, look at the icons on the left-hand navigation sidebar. Click on the icon that looks like a speedometer to open the Startup apps tab. Scroll down the alphabetical list of programs until you find Skype. Look at the “Status” column next to it; it likely says “Enabled.” Right-click on the word Skype and select Disable. The status will change to “Disabled.” From this point forward, Skype will remain completely dormant on your hard drive until the exact moment you manually click its icon to launch it.
