The Cluttered Window
Windows 11 features built-in support for compressing and extracting ZIP files. By default, when you right-click a `.zip` file and select “Extract All,” Windows presents a dialogue box asking for the destination folder. However, this dialogue box includes a sneaky checkbox that is ticked by default: “Show extracted files when complete.” Because of this, every time you extract an archive, Windows 11 immediately spawns a brand new, separate File Explorer window to display the contents you just extracted. If you are extracting a batch of ten different zip files, you will suddenly be bombarded with ten new windows popping up and cluttering your desktop.
Extracting Silently
To keep your desktop clean and stop Windows 11 from automatically opening a new File Explorer window every time you extract a ZIP file, you must uncheck the confirmation box during the extraction process.
The fix for this is incredibly simple, but it must be applied at the moment of extraction. Locate any `.zip` file on your computer. Right-click the file and select Extract All… from the context menu. The “Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders” dialogue box will appear on your screen. Look directly beneath the file path entry field. You will see a checkbox labelled Show extracted files when complete. Click this checkbox to completely uncheck it. Finally, click the Extract button. Windows 11 will now remember this preference. From this point forward, whenever you extract a ZIP file using the native tool, it will silently unpack the contents into the destination folder without aggressively opening a new window to show you.
