The Midnight Reboot
Windows 11 is incredibly aggressive when it comes to applying security patches and feature updates. By default, if an update requires a reboot, Windows will attempt to schedule it for a time you are not actively using the computer (often in the middle of the night). While this ensures your system is always secure, it can be devastating for users who run long, overnight tasks—like rendering a massive video file, compiling large codebases, or downloading huge datasets. Waking up to find your PC on the lock screen, with your 12-hour render completely aborted because Windows decided to restart at 3 AM, is a deeply frustrating experience.
Managing Active Hours
To protect your long-running tasks and stop Windows 11 from automatically restarting after updates, you must configure your “Active Hours” or permanently pause the update scheduler.
Press the Windows Key, type Windows Update, and hit Enter. In the main update panel, scroll down and click on Advanced options. Look for the section labelled Active hours. If it is set to “Automatically,” Windows tries to guess when you are away. Click the dropdown and change it to Manually. You can now define a strict 18-hour window where Windows is absolutely forbidden from rebooting (e.g., 8:00 AM to 2:00 AM). If you need 24-hour protection for a specific project, go back to the main Windows Update screen and click the Pause updates for 1 week button. This completely halts all download and restart behaviors until you resume them manually.
