The Unexpected Delay
Windows 11 is designed to be as unobtrusive as possible when downloading and applying system updates. To prevent your PC from suddenly restarting while you are in the middle of a critical video call or compiling code, the operating system uses a feature called “Active Hours.” During these designated hours, Windows will automatically pause any pending updates and prevent forced reboots. While this is helpful for the average office worker, it can be highly frustrating if you specifically initiated an update process, stepped away from your desk, and returned an hour later only to find that Windows paused the entire procedure because it crossed into your Active Hours.
Overriding Active Hours
To ensure your updates install immediately and stop Windows 11 from automatically pausing updates based on your daily schedule, you must manually adjust or override the Active Hours settings.
Press the Windows Key, type Windows Update, and press Enter to open the Settings panel. In the main right-hand pane, scroll down to the “More options” section and click on Advanced options. Look for the setting labelled Active hours and click it to expand the menu. By default, this is likely set to “Automatically adjust active hours based on activity.” Click the drop-down menu next to “Adjust active hours” and change it from “Automatically” to Manually. While you cannot completely disable Active Hours, you can now set the window to a time when you are definitely asleep (e.g., 2:00 AM to 8:00 AM). Now, if you start an update at 2:00 PM, Windows will not pause it.
