How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Putting Hard Drives to Sleep

The Spindown Delay

To conserve energy and extend the lifespan of mechanical storage, Windows 11 includes a power management feature that automatically puts hard disk drives (HDDs) to sleep after a period of inactivity. This process, often referred to as “spinning down,” completely halts the drive’s platters. While excellent for laptops running on battery, this feature introduces a noticeable lag on desktop PCs. When you attempt to access a file on a sleeping secondary drive, Windows must wait for the drive to spin back up to its operational speed (usually 5400 or 7200 RPM) before the file explorer can display the contents, resulting in a frustrating 3 to 5-second freeze.

Disabling HDD Sleep in Power Options

To ensure your secondary drives are always instantly accessible and stop Windows 11 from automatically putting your hard drives to sleep, you must delve into the advanced power plan settings.

Press the Windows key, type Edit power plan, and press Enter. This opens the legacy Control Panel interface for your current power plan. Near the bottom of the window, click on the blue link that says Change advanced power settings. A small dialogue box titled “Power Options” will appear. Look through the list of settings and click the small plus (+) icon next to Hard disk to expand it. Then, expand the Turn off hard disk after sub-menu. You will see a setting for “Setting (Minutes)”. Click on the number of minutes (e.g., 20). Change this value to 0 (zero). When you enter zero, the text will change to read Never. Click the Apply button, then click OK. Your hard drives will now remain spinning and instantly ready as long as the computer is turned on.
