How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Opening OneDrive on Startup

The Unwanted Cloud Connection

Microsoft heavily integrates its cloud storage service, OneDrive, directly into the core of Windows 11. By default, every time you turn on your computer and log into your user account, OneDrive automatically launches in the background. It immediately begins scanning your hard drive to sync your Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders to the cloud. While this is great for automated backups, it is incredibly frustrating if you use a competing service like Google Drive or Dropbox, or if you are working on a strict, metered internet connection and don’t want gigabytes of data uploading without your explicit permission.

Disabling OneDrive’s Startup Behavior

To retain control over your system resources and stop Windows 11 from automatically opening OneDrive upon startup, you must change the application’s core preferences.

First, ensure OneDrive is currently running (look for the blue or grey cloud icon in your system tray, usually hidden behind the small upward-facing arrow on the right side of your taskbar). Click the OneDrive cloud icon to open its flyout menu. Click the Settings gear icon in the top-right corner of that menu, and select Settings from the list. A new dialogue box will appear. In the left-hand navigation pane of this box, click on Sync and backup. Scroll down to the bottom of this page and expand the Advanced settings section. You will see a toggle switch labeled Start OneDrive automatically when I sign in to Windows. Click this toggle to switch it to the Off position. OneDrive will now only launch when you specifically search for it in the Start menu and open it manually.
