The Cluttered Desktop
Windows 11, particularly when configured with a fresh user account or after a major feature update, can be overly enthusiastic about promoting its built-in applications and Microsoft Store downloads. By default, whenever you download a new application from the Microsoft Store, Windows automatically generates a shortcut icon and places it directly on your desktop. If you are someone who prefers a clean, minimalist workspace, finding your carefully curated wallpaper suddenly obscured by a dozen icons for casual games and productivity apps you just installed is highly frustrating and forces you to manually delete them one by one.
Blocking the Shortcut Generation
To maintain absolute control over your desktop layout and stop Windows 11 from automatically cluttering it with new Store app icons, you must disable the auto-shortcut feature within the Microsoft Store settings.
Open the Microsoft Store application from your taskbar or Start menu. Once the store loads, click on your Profile picture (or the generic user icon if you don’t have a picture set) located in the extreme top-right corner of the window. A dropdown menu will appear. Select App settings from this list. In the settings menu, look near the top for a toggle switch labelled App updates. Directly beneath that, or closely related depending on your exact build version, you will find a setting labelled Show products on desktop or Add icon to desktop after installing. Click the toggle switch next to this setting to turn it Off. Future app installations will now quietly reside in your Start menu, leaving your desktop perfectly clean.
