The Gaming Distraction
Recent versions of macOS (Sonoma and later) include a feature called “Game Mode.” When you launch a demanding, full-screen application that the operating system identifies as a game, macOS automatically optimizes CPU and GPU performance, while simultaneously reducing audio latency for Bluetooth controllers. To alert you that this optimization is active, macOS prominently displays a notification banner at the top of the screen featuring a controller icon and the text “Game Mode On.” While informative the first time, seeing this large notification drop down every single time you launch a quick casual game or return to a minimized full-screen application becomes repetitive and distracting.
Silencing the Game Mode Banner
To maintain your focus and disable the “Game Mode On” notification banner completely in macOS, you must adjust the system’s notification preferences for this specific background service.
Game Mode is not a standard application you can easily find in your Applications folder; it is a system-level process. Therefore, you must modify its behavior through the main settings. Click the Apple logo in the extreme top-left corner of your screen and select System Settings. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Notifications. Scroll down the long list of applications on the right-hand side until you locate the entry specifically named Game Mode. Click on it to open its specific settings. At the top of this menu, you will see a master toggle switch labelled Allow notifications. Click this toggle switch so it turns grey (Off). macOS will continue to optimize your hardware silently in the background when you play games, but it will no longer interrupt you with the visual banner.
