The Disappearing Dock
Windows 11 features a completely redesigned taskbar, centered by default and intended to look sleek. To maximize screen real estate, especially on smaller laptops or tablets, Windows includes an option to “automatically hide the taskbar.” When active, the taskbar completely vanishes from the screen, only reappearing when you slide your mouse cursor to the extreme bottom edge of the display. While this provides a distraction-free, full-screen experience, it can be incredibly frustrating if the taskbar fails to pop up quickly when you need it, or if you prefer to constantly monitor your system clock, battery level, and open applications at a glance.
Pinning the Taskbar
To ensure your crucial system information and application shortcuts remain visible at all times and stop Windows 11 from automatically hiding the taskbar, you must adjust the taskbar behaviors in the personalization settings.
First, move your mouse cursor to the very bottom edge of your screen to force the taskbar to temporarily appear. Once visible, right-click on any empty, blank space on the taskbar itself (do not click on an app icon). A small context menu will appear with a single option: Taskbar settings. Click it to open the personalization menu. Scroll down the resulting page and click on the section labelled Taskbar behaviors to expand it. The very top option in this expanded section is a checkbox explicitly labelled Automatically hide the taskbar. Click this checkbox to completely uncheck it. The moment you uncheck the box, the taskbar will permanently lock into place at the bottom of your screen, regardless of where your mouse cursor is located.
