How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Emptying the Trash

The Vanishing Deleted Files

The Recycle Bin in Windows acts as a crucial safety net. When you delete a file, it isn’t immediately wiped from your hard drive; instead, it is moved to the Recycle Bin, giving you a chance to restore it if you made a mistake. However, Windows 11 includes a feature called Storage Sense, designed to automatically manage disk space. By default, Storage Sense is often configured to quietly empty the Recycle Bin, permanently deleting files that have been sitting there for a certain number of days (usually 30). While this helps keep your hard drive from filling up with garbage, it can be disastrous if you rely on the Recycle Bin as a long-term holding area for “maybe” deleted files.

Disabling Storage Sense Deletion Rules

To ensure your deleted files stay in the Recycle Bin until you manually choose to empty it, you must adjust the Storage Sense settings and stop Windows 11 from automatically clearing the trash.

Press the Windows key + I to open the Settings application. In the left-hand navigation pane, ensure you are on the System tab. In the main window, click on Storage. Look for the Storage management section and click on Storage Sense. You have two choices here. You can turn the toggle switch at the top completely Off to disable all automatic space-saving features. If you want to keep other cleanup features but just protect your deleted files, leave it on but look under the “Configure cleanup schedules” section. Find the dropdown menu labeled Delete files in my recycle bin if they have been there for over. Click this dropdown and select Never. Your Recycle Bin will now retain items indefinitely.
