How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Emptying the Recycle Bin

The Automatic Purge

The Recycle Bin acts as a critical safety net in Windows 11. When you delete a file, it isn’t immediately destroyed; it sits in the bin, allowing you to easily recover it if you realize you made a mistake. However, Windows 11 includes a background utility called Storage Sense, which is designed to keep your hard drive from filling up. By default, Storage Sense is often configured to automatically delete any files that have been sitting in the Recycle Bin for more than 30 days. If you rely on the Recycle Bin as a long-term holding area or a final fail-safe, this automated purging can result in permanent, unexpected data loss.

Disabling the Recycle Bin Timer

To ensure your deleted files remain recoverable until you manually choose to empty the bin and stop Windows 11 from automatically emptying the Recycle Bin, you must adjust the Storage Sense settings.

Press the Windows key, type Storage settings, and press Enter to open the Settings app directly to the Storage page. Under the “Storage management” section, locate Storage Sense. You can completely disable the feature by clicking the master toggle switch to Off. However, if you want Storage Sense to continue cleaning other temporary system files but leave your Recycle Bin alone, click the arrow on the right side of the Storage Sense bar to view its advanced options. Scroll down to the “Temporary Files” section. Locate the dropdown menu labelled Delete files in my recycle bin if they have been there for over:. Click this dropdown and select Never. Your Recycle Bin will now hold its contents indefinitely.
