The Silent Backup
Windows 11 includes a legacy feature called “System Protection” which automatically creates “Restore Points.” These are snapshots of your system files and registry taken before major events, such as installing a new driver or a large Windows Update. If the installation goes horribly wrong, you can roll back your system to that exact point in time. While this is an excellent safety net for the average user, these restore points can consume gigabytes of storage space. If you are already managing your own strict, daily full-disk image backups (using tools like Macrium Reflect or Acronis), having Windows duplicate this effort in the background is a massive waste of resources and disk I/O.
Disabling System Protection
To free up storage space and stop Windows 11 from automatically creating redundant system restore points, you must disable the System Protection feature entirely.
Press the Windows Key, type Create a restore point, and press Enter. This will open the legacy “System Properties” window directly to the System Protection tab. Look at the “Protection Settings” box. You will see a list of your hard drives. Click on the drive labeled (C:) (System) to highlight it, and then click the Configure… button below the list. A new dialogue box will appear. Under the “Restore Settings” header, select the radio button for Disable system protection. A warning will pop up explaining that existing restore points will be deleted; click Yes to confirm. Finally, click Apply and OK. Windows will no longer silently backup system files in the background.
