Why Does Google Drive Open to Priority?
For many Workspace and personal accounts, Google Drive defaults to opening the “Priority” page (or the “Home” view in newer layouts) when you navigate to drive.google.com. This page uses machine learning to suggest files you might want to open based on your recent activity, upcoming calendar events, and typical working hours.
While Google intends this to be helpful, many users find it chaotic. If you rely on a strictly organized folder structure, having the system randomly throw “suggested” files at you completely ruins your workflow. You can easily force Google Drive to open your traditional “My Drive” folder hierarchy instead.
How to Set “My Drive” as Your Default Homepage
You can change your default startup page directly within the Google Drive settings.
- Open your web browser and navigate to Google Drive.
- Click the Settings gear icon located in the top-right corner of the screen (next to your profile picture).
- Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
- A popup window will appear. Ensure you are on the General tab on the left.
- Look for the section near the top labelled Start page.
- You will see a dropdown menu that is currently set to “Home” (or “Priority”). Click the dropdown.
- Select My Drive.
- Click the back arrow in the top-left of the settings window to save and exit.
The next time you log into Google Drive or open a fresh tab to drive.google.com, you will bypass the AI suggestions completely and land directly in your familiar, organized root folder.
