The Intrusive Layouts
Windows 11 introduced a powerful window management tool called “Snap Layouts.” When you hover your mouse cursor over the maximize button of any application window, a small popup grid appears, suggesting various ways to split your screen (e.g., side-by-side, thirds, or quadrants). While incredibly useful for multitasking on large, high-resolution monitors, this popup can be highly disruptive on smaller laptop screens or for users who rely on fast, precise mouse movements. If you frequently click near the top-right corner of a window, the Snap Layouts flyout can accidentally trigger, blocking your view and sometimes causing you to misclick and accidentally snap a window to the wrong side of the screen.
Disabling the Hover Popup
To eliminate this visual clutter and disable the Snap Assist suggestion popup when hovering over the maximize button in Windows 11, you must adjust the multitasking settings.
Press the Windows Key and click the gear icon to open the Settings application. In the left-hand navigation pane, select System. On the right side, scroll down and click on the Multitasking section. At the very top of this page, you will see a master toggle switch for “Snap windows.” Do not turn this main toggle off unless you want to disable window snapping entirely (like dragging to the edge of the screen). Instead, click the small down arrow next to the “Snap windows” toggle to expand its advanced options. Look for the specific checkbox labelled Show snap layouts when I hover over a window’s maximize button. Click this checkbox to completely uncheck it. The popup will immediately cease appearing, but you can still use keyboard shortcuts (Win + Arrow keys) to manage your windows.
