How to Completely Disable ‘Compatibility Checker’ in Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel is frequently used in environments where multiple users operate different versions of the software. To prevent data loss when sharing files with users on legacy systems (like Excel 97-2003), modern versions of Excel include a “Compatibility Checker.” When you attempt to save a workbook in an older format (such as .xls), this tool intercepts the save process and presents a dialogue box detailing all the modern features (like sparklines, advanced conditional formatting, or new formulas) that will be lost or degraded in the older format. While this is an important safety net, if your organization explicitly mandates saving in older formats and you are fully aware of the formatting limitations, the constant pop-up interruptions become highly tedious.

This guide explains how to completely disable the Compatibility Checker for a specific workbook in Microsoft Excel, allowing you to save in legacy formats without interruption.

Disable the Checker for the Current Workbook

Unlike many global Excel settings, the Compatibility Checker is disabled on a per-workbook basis. You cannot turn it off system-wide for every future file, but you can permanently silence it for the active document.

  1. Open the Excel workbook that is triggering the compatibility warnings.
  2. Click on the File tab located in the top-left corner of the Ribbon.
  3. Select Info from the left-hand menu.
  4. Click the large button labelled Check for Issues (located next to “Inspect Workbook”).
  5. From the drop-down menu, select Check Compatibility.
  6. The Compatibility Checker dialogue box will appear, listing the potential formatting losses.
  7. At the very bottom of this dialogue box, uncheck the box labelled Check compatibility when saving this workbook.
  8. Click OK to apply the change.

Once you uncheck this box, the setting is saved within the workbook itself. You can now press Ctrl + S to save the file in the older .xls format, and Excel will execute the save instantly, silently stripping out incompatible features without halting your workflow.

Re-Enabling the Checker

If you ever need to review the compatibility issues again before a major distribution of the file, you can manually trigger the scan.

  1. Navigate back to File > Info > Check for Issues > Check Compatibility.
  2. The dialogue box will run its scan and display the results.
  3. If you want the automatic warnings to resume upon saving, simply re-check the Check compatibility when saving this workbook box at the bottom of the window before clicking OK.
