Windows 11 includes a feature called “Clipboard History.” Instead of only remembering the very last thing you copied (Ctrl+C), Windows stores a running log of the last 25 items you copied, including text snippets, URLs, and even small images. You can view this log at any time by pressing Windows Key + V.
While incredibly useful for data entry, this feature represents a massive security and privacy risk on a shared computer. If you copy a password, a bank account number, or a private message, it remains stored in the clipboard history for anyone else to paste later. If you value your privacy, you should disable the clipboard history feature so that Windows instantly forgets your copied data the moment you copy something new.
How to Turn Off Clipboard History in Windows 11
You can disable the history log directly from the System settings.
- Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + I).
- In the left-hand navigation pane, ensure you are on the System tab.
- Scroll down the main window on the right and click on Clipboard.
- Look for the toggle switch labelled Clipboard history.
- Click the toggle switch to turn it Off.
As soon as you disable this setting, Windows 11 will instantly purge all previously saved items. Moving forward, the clipboard will revert to its classic, secure behaviour: it will only ever hold a single item in its memory, and copying a new item will immediately overwrite the old one.
