Whenever you plug a USB flash drive, an external hard drive, or an SD card into your Windows 11 computer, the operating system instantly triggers a feature called “AutoPlay.” Depending on your settings, Windows will immediately open a File Explorer window to show the contents of the drive, or pop up a large notification asking what you want to do with the device.
If you are an IT professional plugging in diagnostic drives, or simply someone who connects a lot of external media, this automatic pop-up is incredibly intrusive. Furthermore, automatically executing actions on unknown USB drives is a classic security vulnerability. You can easily disable AutoPlay completely to ensure Windows ignores newly inserted drives until you manually open them.
How to Turn Off AutoPlay in Windows 11
You can disable all automatic drive actions directly from the Bluetooth & devices settings.
- Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + I).
- In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Bluetooth & devices.
- Scroll down the main window on the right and click on AutoPlay.
- At the very top of the AutoPlay menu, you will see a master toggle switch labelled Use AutoPlay for all media and devices.
- Click the toggle switch to turn it completely Off.
From this point forward, Windows 11 will remain perfectly silent when you connect an external drive. It will still mount the drive in the background, allowing you to access it whenever you are ready by opening File Explorer and clicking on “This PC,” but it will never again interrupt your screen with an automatic pop-up.
