Since the late 2016 MacBook Pro redesign, Apple implemented a new hardware feature called “Auto Boot.” If your MacBook is completely powered down and shut off, simply lifting the lid to open the computer will cause it to automatically boot up. Furthermore, if the lid is already open but the laptop is shut down, pressing any key on the keyboard or clicking the trackpad will also force a boot.
While Apple intended this to be a fast and convenient way to get to work, it is incredibly annoying when you are trying to clean your laptop. If you just want to wipe down the screen with a microfiber cloth, or blow dust out of the keyboard using compressed air, the laptop will constantly turn itself on, boot to the login screen, and register dozens of accidental keypresses.
You can disable the Auto Boot feature using a quick Terminal command, returning your MacBook to traditional power button mechanics.
How to Turn Off MacBook Auto Boot
This hardware change requires a direct modification to the Mac’s NVRAM.
- Open the Terminal app on your Mac (you can find it in Applications > Utilities, or by searching in Spotlight).
- Carefully copy and paste the following command into the Terminal window:
sudo nvram AutoBoot=%00
- Press Enter.
- You will be prompted to type your Mac’s administrator password. (Note: As you type, the characters will not appear on the screen. This is normal security behavior. Just type it and press Enter).
- Close the Terminal.
Your MacBook will no longer automatically turn on when you lift the lid or press a key. It will remain completely powered down until you physically press the Touch ID / Power button in the top right corner, allowing you to clean the hardware safely.
