In Windows 11, the Event Viewer is the master diagnostic ledger of the entire operating system. It silently records thousands of logs every day, tracking everything from successful driver installations to silent background application crashes and network security audits. Over time, these logs can accumulate into the tens of thousands, taking up a small amount of disk space and making the Event Viewer extremely sluggish to load.
If you have recently fixed a major computer problem and want a clean slate to monitor for new errors, or if you simply want to erase the historical record of a specific application crashing, you can perform a mass deletion of the Event Viewer logs. You can clear individual log categories or wipe the entire system slate clean.
How to Clear Event Viewer Logs in Windows 11
You can clear specific log categories directly from the Event Viewer’s graphical interface.
- Click the Start button, type Event Viewer, and press Enter to launch the application.
- In the left-hand navigation pane, click the small arrow next to Windows Logs to expand the folder.
- You will see the five main log categories: Application, Security, Setup, System, and Forwarded Events.
- To clear a specific category (for example, the “Application” logs), right-click on Application.
- Select Clear Log… from the context menu.
- A warning dialog will appear, asking if you want to save a backup of the logs before clearing them. Since the goal is to erase them, click the button labelled Clear (do not click “Save and Clear”).
- The center pane will instantly empty out, leaving a pristine slate.
- Repeat this process for the System and Security logs if you wish to completely wipe the diagnostic history of your Windows 11 machine.
Note that immediately after clearing a log, Windows will instantly generate one or two new “Information” events stating that the log was successfully cleared by your user account. This is normal behavior and proves that the Event Viewer service is still functioning correctly.
