How to Clear the Search History in Windows 11

The search bar built into the Windows 11 taskbar is a powerful tool, allowing you to instantly find local files, system settings, and even execute web searches via Microsoft Bing. To make your life easier, Windows actively remembers your previous search queries. When you click on the search bar, it immediately displays a list of your “Recent” searches, allowing you to quickly jump back to a document or setting you recently accessed. However, if you share your computer with family members or coworkers, you may not want them seeing your recent activity the moment they click the Start menu. For privacy reasons, you can easily clear this history.

How to Clear Your Local Search History

Windows 11 stores a local cache of the files, apps, and settings you have searched for on that specific machine. You can clear this cache entirely through the main Settings app.

1. Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press the Windows Key + I shortcut).
2. In the left-hand navigation menu, click on Privacy & security.
3. Scroll down the right side of the screen until you reach the “Windows permissions” section.
4. Click on Search permissions.
5. Scroll down the resulting page to the “History” section.
6. You will see a setting labelled “Search history on this device.” Below that, click the button labelled Clear device search history.

A small checkmark will briefly appear next to the button to confirm the action was successful. All locally stored recent searches have now been wiped.

How to Disable Future Local Search Tracking

If you find yourself constantly clearing this history and prefer that Windows simply never remembers your searches in the first place, you can disable the tracking entirely.

1. Navigate back to Settings > Privacy & security > Search permissions.
2. Scroll down to the “History” section.
3. Look for the toggle switch labelled Search history on this device.
4. Click the toggle switch to turn it Off.

Windows will no longer record your local searches or display them as suggestions when you click the search bar.

How to Clear Cloud Search History

If you use a Microsoft Account (rather than a local offline account) to log into Windows 11, Microsoft may be syncing your search history to the cloud to provide a unified experience across multiple devices. Clearing your local device history does not automatically delete this cloud data.

1. In the same Search permissions menu (from the steps above), look for the “Cloud content search” section.
2. If you have “Microsoft account” toggled on, your history is being synced.
3. To delete the cloud data, scroll back down to the “History” section.
4. Click the blue link that says Privacy dashboard.
5. This will open Microsoft Edge and take you to your online Microsoft privacy account page. You will likely need to log in.
6. Once logged in, navigate to the “Search history” section on the dashboard and click the option to clear all stored search data associated with your Microsoft account.
