How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Suggesting Passwords

When you create a new account on a website, Windows 11 will often display a popup offering to generate and save a highly complex password for you. While this feature is designed to improve security, it can be incredibly annoying if you already use a dedicated third-party password manager like 1Password or Bitwarden, as the two systems will constantly fight for control over your text boxes.

How to Disable Built-In Password Suggestions

This setting is managed by Microsoft Autofill within the Windows 11 Settings app.

  1. Open the Settings app by pressing Windows Key + I on your keyboard.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Accounts.
  3. Scroll down to the “Account settings” section and click on Passwords & passkeys.
  4. Look for the section labelled Additional settings.
  5. Find the toggle switch labelled: Suggest strong passwords when creating new accounts.
  6. Click the toggle switch to turn it Off.

By disabling this feature, Windows will no longer aggressively suggest long strings of random characters when you click on a “New Password” field in Microsoft Edge or supported Windows apps, leaving your dedicated password manager free to do its job without interference.
