The Intrusive Typer
Windows 11 includes an aggressive text prediction engine designed primarily for touch-screen devices and tablets. However, this feature is sometimes enabled by default even on traditional desktop computers. When active, Windows monitors your keystrokes globally across almost all applications (including web browsers and chat clients) and constantly flashes predictive word suggestions in a small floating box directly above your cursor. For fast touch-typists or programmers, this flashing box is not only visually distracting but can actively disrupt your workflow if you accidentally hit the ‘Up’ arrow key and select a wrong word.
Silencing the Suggestions
To eliminate this distraction, you must dive into the specific hardware keyboard settings within Windows 11 and disable the predictive text engine entirely. This will not affect spelling autocorrect, but it will stop the operating system from trying to guess your next word.
Press the Windows Key and click the gear icon to launch the Settings application. In the left-hand navigation pane, select Time & language. Next, click on Typing in the main window. Scroll down until you find the section specifically labelled Hardware keyboard and click it to expand the menu options. Locate the toggle switch named Show text suggestions as I type and turn it completely Off. The change is immediate. You can now return to typing in any application, and the floating predictive text box will no longer appear above your cursor.
