Over time, the lithium-ion battery inside your Windows 11 laptop naturally degrades. However, the software sensor that estimates your remaining battery life often degrades faster than the physical cells. This desynchronization causes your laptop to display 40% battery life, only to instantly shut down a minute later, or it might sit at 100% for three hours before rapidly plummeting to zero.
To fix this, you do not necessarily need to buy a new battery. You must manually force Windows 11 to recalibrate its software sensors. This is a purely physical process that requires completely draining and recharging the battery while preventing Windows from putting the computer to sleep.
How to Manually Force a Windows 11 Battery Calibration
You must change your power plan settings to prevent the laptop from hibernating prematurely.
- First, plug your laptop into the wall charger and let it charge until the battery icon in the taskbar says 100%. Leave it plugged in for at least two hours after it reaches 100% to ensure the cells are completely saturated.
- Next, click the Start button, type Control Panel, and press Enter.
- Change the “View by” setting in the top right to Large icons, and click on Power Options.
- On the left sidebar, click Create a power plan. Name it “Calibration” and click Next.
- Change the “Turn off the display” and “Put the computer to sleep” drop-down menus to Never for both the “On battery” and “Plugged in” columns. Click Create.
- Now, unplug the charger from the wall.
- Leave your laptop turned on. You can use it normally, or simply leave it sitting on a desk. Because you changed the power plan, the screen will stay on until the battery is completely, utterly exhausted.
- Wait until the laptop physically dies and the screen goes completely black.
Once the laptop is dead, leave it unplugged for at least one hour to allow the battery to cool down. Finally, plug the charger back in and do not turn the laptop on. Let it charge uninterrupted for at least 4 hours. Once you boot back into Windows 11, the software sensor will have recorded the true 0% and 100% markers, permanently fixing your wildly incorrect battery percentage readouts.
