How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Hiding the Taskbar

The Disappearing Dock

Windows 11 features an optional setting designed to maximize your usable screen real estate by automatically hiding the taskbar. When this feature is active, the taskbar slides completely off the bottom edge of the screen, only reappearing when you physically drag your mouse cursor to the very bottom boundary. While useful on small laptop screens or when watching full-screen videos, it can be highly frustrating during normal productivity workflows. If you constantly need to check the time, monitor battery life, or quickly switch between several active applications, waiting for the taskbar to animate up and down every few seconds completely breaks your concentration.

Pinning the Taskbar

To ensure your application icons and system tray are always visible and to stop Windows 11 from automatically hiding the taskbar, you must adjust the core taskbar behaviors within the Personalization menu.

Right-click on any empty space on your Taskbar (you may need to hover your mouse at the bottom of the screen to make it appear first). Select Taskbar settings from the small context menu. This will open the Settings application directly to the correct page. Scroll down to the very bottom of this page and click on the Taskbar behaviors section to expand the advanced options. Look for the first setting in the list, labelled Automatically hide the taskbar. Next to this text is a simple checkbox. Click this checkbox to completely remove the checkmark. The change is immediate. Your taskbar will instantly snap to the bottom of the screen and remain permanently locked in place, regardless of what applications you open.
