How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Emptying the Recycle Bin

The Silent Deletion

Windows 11 includes a storage management feature called “Storage Sense.” When activated, this utility works silently in the background to monitor your hard drive space. To ensure you never run out of room, Storage Sense frequently takes autonomous action, which includes automatically emptying your Recycle Bin on a regular schedule (usually every 30 days). While this is helpful for keeping a small SSD clean, it is incredibly dangerous if you are the type of user who occasionally uses the Recycle Bin as a temporary holding folder for files you are not quite sure you want to permanently delete yet.

Protecting the Bin

To ensure you have the final say over permanent file deletion and stop Windows 11 from automatically emptying your Recycle Bin, you must adjust the specific parameters within the Storage Sense settings.

Press the Windows Key and click the gear icon to open the Settings app. In the left-hand navigation pane, ensure you are on the System tab. In the main right-hand panel, click on Storage. Look for the section labelled “Storage management” and click on Storage Sense. (Do not just click the toggle switch; click the actual text to open the advanced menu). Scroll down to the section titled “Configure cleanup schedules.” Look for the dropdown menu explicitly labelled Delete files in my recycle bin if they have been there for over:. Click this dropdown and change the selection from the default (e.g., “30 days”) to Never. From now on, files will remain in your Recycle Bin indefinitely until you explicitly right-click the icon and choose to empty it.
