When operating a Windows 11 laptop on battery power, you might notice the screen brightness shifting down abruptly or fluctuating when alternating between dark application windows and bright web pages. While Microsoft integrates these features to conserve battery life and extend runtime, unexpected brightness reductions make text difficult to read, distort colours for photo and video editing, and cause eye strain. In Windows 11, automated screen dimming is governed by two separate settings: Battery Saver display dimming and Content Adaptive Brightness Control (CABC).
Disabling the Battery Saver Screen Dimming Feature
When your laptop drops below a certain battery threshold (by default, 20%), Windows 11 engages Battery Saver mode, which automatically reduces screen backlight intensity:
- Press
Windows Key + Ito open the Settings app. - Click on System in the left sidebar, then select Power & battery.
- Scroll down and click on Battery saver to expand its configuration drawer.
- Locate the toggle switch labelled Lower screen brightness when using battery saver.
- Switch the toggle to Off.
Your display will now preserve your chosen brightness level even when the laptop enters low-battery conservation mode.
Disabling Content Adaptive Brightness Control (CABC)
If your screen continues to fluctuate brightness based on whether the content on screen is predominantly light or dark (such as watching a dark movie scene or editing code), Content Adaptive Brightness Control is active:
- In Settings, navigate to System > Display.
- Click the small downward arrow next to the primary Brightness slider to expand advanced display options.
- Locate the setting labelled Change brightness based on content.
- Click the drop-down selector and choose Off (or Only on Battery if you only wish to disable it while plugged into AC mains).
- Additionally, if your laptop includes an ambient light sensor, uncheck the box labelled Change brightness automatically when lighting changes to prevent room lighting from altering your screen.
Disabling Dynamic Backlight in GPU Control Panels
On laptops equipped with Intel or AMD integrated graphics, OEM display power-saving features may operate independently of Windows settings:
- Intel Graphics Command Center: Open the Intel Graphics Command Center app, navigate to System > Power, and turn off Display Power Savings and Enhanced Power Saving.
- AMD Radeon Software: Open AMD Software, switch to Settings > Display, and toggle off Vari-Bright to ensure consistent screen luminance at all times.
